While some people are hopping on planes this holiday, a lot of others are choosing to travel by car. You get to see the sights, spend quality time with friends or family, and explore new surroundings — because sometimes it’s as much about the journey as it is the destination. But winter can bring new elements to the table and can be dangerous if you’re not prepared.
To help you reach your destination outside Florida safely, we’re sharing some dos and don’ts of Orlando car maintenance for your holiday trip!
Do’s of holiday car maintenance:
#1 Do inspect all of your vehicle lights before you go.
Your lighting system includes your headlights (low and high beams), taillights, turning signals, brake lights, and inside lights. Your outside lights are the main way you communicate with other drivers on the road, making them integral to your long holiday drive. Not to mention they’re your car’s night goggles and help you see better through inclement weather. Take the time to check them; make sure they are functioning properly and that they aren’t cloudy.
#2 Do make sure your brakes are in tip-top shape.
Your brake system is arguably the most important part of your vehicle, keeping both you and your fellow travelers safe. If you’re driving somewhere where there will be snow, fog, or rain, you’ll need capable brakes that will bring you to a complete stop, sometimes immediately, on your journey. Some of the most common reasons our Orlando Toyota auto service team sees for brake failure include brake fluid leaks, loose calipers, and worn brake pads. If you think you may be experiencing any of these issues, stop in to get them checked.
Don’ts of Orlando auto service:
#3 Don’t leave without checking your tires.
Keeping the proper pressure on your tires will improve your car’s fuel efficiency, and it is critical to the handling of your vehicle. If you’re unsure how much air your tires should have, check your owner’s manual. Also be sure to test the tread on your tires. To check your tire wear, place a penny face first into several tread grooves on your tires. If you always see Abraham Lincoln’s head, your tires are worn and should be replaced. If you’re in need of Orlando tire service, stop by and see us!
#4 Don’t forget to check your fluid levels.
Before you leave on your winter journey, be sure to check all of your fluid levels, including your coolant, engine oil, and brake fluid. Each of them plays a significant role in different functions of your vehicle, and you can check them on your own — so don’t neglect this step! If you happen to find that you need a cheap oil change, stop by one of our Orlando dealerships, and we’ll get you ready to go.
