It’s rainy season again! Have your prepared your rain-ready car? We talked to our service specialists at our Orlando Automotive Family (OAF) dealerships, Toyota of Orlando and Toyota of Clermont, and put together a list of ways to drive safely in the rain and a list of what parts of the car need to be maintained for rain driving.
Ways to drive safely in the rain
- Use your headlights
It can be much harder to see the road when it’s raining. Our Orlando dealerships recommend always using your headlights whenever it’s raining. Headlights will increase your visibility while you’re behind the wheel. Increased visibility will give you more time to react to things happening in front of you, thus helping you drive safely. Headlights also make it easier for other people to see you too. This will help reduce your chance on getting into a wreak on your Orlando commute.
- Avoid driving in puddles
If you can safely get around a puddle of water while driving, do it! Water can look shallower than it is. If you suddenly drive through deep water it can damage the electrical components of your car as well as your engine bay. If you must drive through a puddle, try to only drive on the sides of it.
- Drive defensively
Some drivers will become more aggressive when it’s raining, so it’s important that you drive defensively. Since visibility will be reduced, always check twice when you’re changing lanes and keep an eye on the cars beside you so they don’t hit the side of your vehicle.
- Go slow
It’s important to drive slower than you usually do when it’s raining. There are a lot of unpredictable events that can happen suddenly when you’re driving in the rain. If you’re driving slow and a vehicle near your hydroplanes, you will have more time to move your vehicle and avoid a collision. You can easily drive safely around Orlando in the rain by going slow!
Prep your car with Orlando car maintenance
It’s vital that your tires have enough tread on them when you’re driving in the rain. If your tires have low tread on them, your chances of hydroplaning will drastically increase. It’s also important that your car’s tires are at the right PSI. Having tires that are underinflated or overinflated will also increase your risk of hydroplaning.
- Windshield wipers
It’s important to have windshield wipers that work properly when you’re driving in the rain. Windshield wipers that leave streak marks can sometimes make your view of the road worse than just the rain alone. If your wipers aren’t giving you a streak-free windshield, they are overdue for a change. Having a clear view of the road is a necessity for you to drive safely.
- Headlights restoration
Your car’s headlights will get foggy and discolored overtime. Headlights that aren’t clear won’t project as much light as clear ones. Our OAF service teams can help you drive safely by restoring your vehicles headlights so they are clear again.
