It seems like thieves are everywhere nowadays. That’s why it’s important to stay sharp and decrease the chances of making yourself a target. So our teams at our Orlando Automotive Family (OAF) dealerships, Toyota of Orlando and Toyota of Clermont, are going to be sharing their tips on ways you can prevent car theft.
Car theft prevention tips
Tip 1 – Always lock your car
Make sure that you always lock your car. It doesn’t matter if you’re away from your car, just pumping gas or even driving, locking your car door helps prevent bad people from entering your vehicle.
Tip 2 – Turn your car off if you’re not in it
We recommend never leaving your vehicle on when there is not someone in it. A running car with no one inside is an easy target for Orlando car theft. Because most cars need to have their keys inside their vehicle to turn on, thief’s think that stealing an unoccupied running car is as easy as sitting in the driver’s seat.
Tip 3 – Don’t leave your valuables out
Leaving your valuables out is another way to put your car at high risk for car theft in Orlando. That’s why you never want to have valuable items like phones, laptops, handbags, jewelry or money laying out in the open. You never know what kind of person may be looking in your vehicle as they walk by. We recommend never leaving valuable items in your vehicle, or hiding them out of sight if you do decide to leave them the car to minimize car break-ins. This is especially true if it’s your vehicle’s keys.
Tip 4 – Close your windows and doors
When you’re not in your vehicle make sure that you close your windows, doors and even your moon roof. These are easy access points to your vehicle that make car theft that much easier. It’s ok to have these down when you’re enjoying the Orlando sun on your ride, but get into the habit of closing these before you leave your vehicle.
Tip 5 – Put an anti-theft system on your car
If a car thief sees that a vehicle has an anti-theft system installed in it, it may make them think again before they decide to steal it. Most auto thieves don’t want to risk jail time for a vehicle that has a high chance of being recovered quickly. So this is a great investment to help ensure the safety of your vehicle and your belongings.

Tip 6 – Park in an area with lots of lights and people
Always try to park in an area that’s well-lit if you can. A lot of car thieves like to work in the dark because they don’t want to be seen by any witnesses. If an onlooker sees someone messing with a vehicle in the dark, it may be difficult for them to notice any self-identifying features of the suspect that they can pass along to law enforcement. So always try to park in an area with a lot of light and a lot of people to help prevent car theft.
Tip 7 – Be aware of what’s around you
Always be aware of your environment, especially when you’re looking for a place to park and leave your vehicle. If you see a strange person or feel weird about a specific parking spot, find another place to park.
