It should come to no surprise that Toyota safety is one of the top priorities at Toyota. Through countless hours of testing and experiments, Toyota figures out what features keep drivers and passengers the safest. It’s with this principle in mind that has Toyota and the Global Institute for Motor Safety (Global Institute) have partnered up for a four-year research project using Toyota’s Total Human Model for Safety (THUMS). They’re partnering specifically to enhance safety in motorsports. The Orlando Automotive Family is here to tell you about this new partnership, and what makes Toyota safety so special.
This new joint research project will cover not only collisions involving closed-circuit race cars. It will also include collisions that involved rally cars and a review of seat structures and seatbelt positioning. The Global Institute hopes that the results found will allow them to update motor sports regulations and more so that the safety of motorsports vehicles is enhanced, protecting the participants even more than it currently does.
Why the switch from traditional crash dummies to THUMS? Crash dummies can’t easily provide information on how collisions will impact the brain, internal organs, and other parts of the human body. This is where THUMS comes in. It allows for computer simulation and analysis of conditions during a crash and the process of injury occurrence. It even allows an analysis of injuries to internal organs and other parts of the body that a crash dummy couldn’t provide.
THUMS has been utilized since 2007 for general automobiles and motorsports including the FIA and NASCAR. This Toyota safety tool will hopefully provide more information with the new partnership between Toyota and the Global Institute.
